Buddy
Buddy wasn’t satisfied with ordinary dog sticks. His were always the biggest in the forest. He carried them around proudly for the entire walk, deftly navigating them past constrictions in the trail that would stop and confound most dogs. And when he didn't feel like walking, this gentle boy loved to lie around and patiently reduce a log to a pile of toothpicks.
When I met Buddy he had been diagnosed with lymphoma at only six years old and was given a prognosis of only three weeks to live, six weeks earlier. But I got to walk this sweet boy for another two and a half months and in that time he lived his best life. Despite the cancer that ravaged his body, his tail never stopped wagging until the very end.
